By capturing organic waste, producing renewable energy, and returning nutrients and organic content to the soil, the biogas industry is uniquely positioned to help achieve emissions reductions and mitigate many of the impacts of climate change. To meet the Paris Agreement goals, energy generation emissions must fall to around 80kg of CO2 per MWh by 2040 – only renewables can provide this future (IEA: 2016). Biogas can be used to reduce the sources of greenhouse gases or to increase the sinks of greenhouse gases. Biogas is a particularly adaptable form of energy generation. It can generate baseload electricity, meet peak demand, provide low-carbon heat, or be upgraded for use as a transportation fuel.
Reduced global warming should encourage policymakers to promote biogas technology to combat climate change, and the incorporation of carbon revenues will assist farmers in developing biogas as a profitable activity.
